Spring

Presumed Innocent

Spring is both the novel’s opening time marker and a recurring measure of change. Its appearances register a shift in the air and the approach of warmer weather, while the political and personal tensions surrounding Rusty Sabich and Raymond Horgan remain unresolved. The season advances; the crises do not simply lift with it.

Opening Frame

The standalone marker “SPRING” precedes the opening chapter, establishing the season as part of the novel’s frame from the outset. Early in the narrative, Rusty travels through a neighborhood whose weathered houses and working-class families recall his own childhood. Against that setting, he recognizes Raymond as bound up with both his past and his future: years of loyalty have made Raymond’s political decline feel consequential to Rusty, even as an inward voice registers discontent. Spring therefore begins not as uncomplicated renewal but alongside memory, dependence, and a gathering professional crisis.

A Change in the Air

Later, after a campaign meeting, Raymond asks what is happening in the office. Outside, beneath the club’s awning, Rusty notices that the air has softened since morning and feels the season approaching. The moment gives the seasonal shift a bodily immediacy, but it does not resolve the conflict between the two men. Rusty reports that Nico Delia Guardia and Tommy Molto are conducting an independent investigation, and Raymond reacts with irritation. The promise of spring sits beside political suspicion and a deteriorating sense of trust.

From Spring Toward Summer

On another trip back downtown, Rusty describes their spring as turning quickly toward summer. The change is marked by the warmth of the day and by passersby adopting lighter seasonal clothing. Yet the investigation remains stalled: Rusty tells Dan Lipranzer that they are still nowhere. This contrast gives the recurring season its clearest narrative function. Time and weather move forward, while the search for answers struggles to make progress. Spring is a passing interval, not a guarantee that the story’s uncertainties will be renewed or resolved.
